The police oversight body is examining two ex-officers who were apprehended in connection with an inquiry into past child sexual assault.

Former police officers were apprehended last year by South Yorkshire Police after allegations were made by four survivors of child sexual abuse in Rotherham during the 1990s and early 2000s.

In October, South Yorkshire Police submitted the issue to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

IOPC director Emily Barry stated: “Subsequently, additional complaints were received from a second woman in November and from two more women in December, which were referred to us by SYP following their preliminary investigations.”

“These complaints are significant, and we will guarantee a comprehensive and rigorous investigation.”

A retired officer in his 60s is under investigation for allegedly assaulting two females from 1995 to 1999.

He was apprehended in October 2024 and interrogated under caution on allegations of misbehaviour in public service, attempted rape, and three instances of indecent assault.

This month, he was additionally arrested for alleged sexual offences against a third complainant occurring between 1997 and 2002, and subsequently released on bail.

A second ex-constable, in his 50s, was apprehended in December on allegations of sexual assault, misconduct in public office, and one count of indecent assault related to occurrences occurring between 1995 and 1996.

The misconduct reportedly occurred when the former cops, stationed in Rotherham, were on and off duty.

Assistant Chief Constable Hayley Barnett of South Yorkshire Police stated: “We are collaborating closely with the Independent Office for Police Conduct to facilitate their investigation, which is being conducted by our major crime unit under the IOPC’s oversight and authority.”

We are dedicated to pursuing the evidence wherever it leads and will undertake all required actions, as evidenced by these arrests.

It is never too late to report if you are a victim or survivor of child sexual abuse and exploitation. I am fully cognisant of the challenges involved in reporting such offences, especially when the perpetrators are current or former police personnel; yet, we remain resolutely dedicated to achieving justice.
