Sian Hedges and Jack Benham were convicted of murdering 18-month-old Alfie Phillips in Hernhill after a nine-week trial at Maidstone Crown Court. The court determined that the slain toddler sustained 70 distinct injuries.
Sian Hedges and Jack Benham have been sentenced to a minimum of 19 years and 23 years in jail, respectively. On November 28, 2020, they perpetrated a series of injuries at Jack Benham’s residence. Sian Hedges, 27, of Fillace Park, Yelverton, Devon, and Jack Benham, 35, of Highstreet Road, Hernhill, both refuted allegations of causing harm to Alfie.
Sian Hedges and Jack Benham asserted that they slept in the same bed with him overnight and discovered him lifeless around 11:30 AM. The emergency services were summoned, and Alfie was pronounced dead at 12:35 PM.
Medical professionals observed numerous contusions and injuries on the child’s body, prompting the attendance of law enforcement at the hospital, where Sian Hedges and Jack Benham were apprehended on the same day. Investigators from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate initiated an inquiry.
On 30 November 2023, Sian Hedges and Jack Benham were both found guilty of murder. They were sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday 12 January 2024.
