Remorseless paedophile Maurice Holliday, 75, started a double-figure jail term after his horrific past caught up with him.
The child rapist, Maurice Holliday, blighted the lives of two girls with sexual abuse decades ago.
Maurice Holliday denied all wrongdoing and put the women through the ordeal of giving evidence in a trial at Teesside Crown Court.
One of the victims said in a statement she was underage and “knew nothing about life” when Maurice Holliday took an interest in her.
She said: “I later came to realise how much he groomed me and as I became more mature I realised how wrong it was and how he had used me.
“The thoughts about what happened never really left the back of my mind.”
Maurice Holliday went on to rape and sexually assault another girl repeatedly, amid violence and threats to ensure her silence.
A judge said Maurice Holliday “took her childhood” with the “grotesque offences”, inflicted severe psychological harm and showed no remorse.
Maurice Holliday was already a convicted sex offender, having served a three-year prison sentence in 1965 for raping another underage girl whom he and others had lured from an amusement park.
A jury unanimously convicted the Darlington man on three counts of rape and six of indecent assault and he was jailed for 17 years.
