A Northamptonshire man, Kevin Newson Daventry Paedophile, who extorted a youngster into transmitting additional sexual photographs by threatening to share them with her family and friends has been punished.

Kevin Newson, 43, of Daventry, was apprehended by National Crime Agency investigators following a report from a 16-year-old minor to American authorities. She stated that Newson had reached out to her through online messaging systems, requesting her to transmit explicit photographs in late 2019 and early 2020.

Kevin Newson informed her that he will remit funds for the photographs, including a screenshot of his UK bank account. The victim transmitted photographs of herself to him but refused to provide more ones when Newson solicited them.

He subsequently threatened to disseminate the photographs he possessed to her family, friends, and school if she did not provide additional images.

Kevin Newson was apprehended by the NCA in June 2022, and upon examination of his phone, officers uncovered one Category B indecent video and 14 severe photos.

Chat records between the victim and Newson were extracted from the victim’s device, which additionally displayed his online profile and an image of himself.

Kevin Newson declined to react on all enquiries during the interview.

He was indicted and presented at Northampton Crown Court on 10 February, where he entered a plea of guilty to charges of blackmail and causing or instigating the sexual exploitation of a minor. Allegations of creating an indecent photograph of a minor and possessing severe pornographic materials will be retained on record.

He received a sentence of two years and four months of incarceration at the same court today. He will be subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and will be registered on the Sex Offenders Register for a duration of 10 years.

Phil Eccles, Senior Investigating Officer at the NCA, stated:

Kevin Newson manipulated his victim into the belief that they were buddies. However, upon submitting indecent photographs as requested by Newson, he extorted her for additional images by threatening to disseminate the originals to her family, friends, and school.

Kevin Newson believed that the separation from his victim would allow his abuse to persist undetected; nevertheless, because to the collaboration with our US partners and the diligence of our detectives, his offences have been revealed.

“The NCA will persist in its efforts to bring criminals such as Newson to justice and to pursue offenders involved in the exploitation of children.”

  • Advice for victims under 18:
  • Increase privacy settings to restrict who can make contact with you or your online contacts.
  • Don’t pay, stop contact and block: you may be tempted to pay, but there is no guarantee that this will stop the threats. As the offender’s motive is to get money, once you have shown you can pay, they will likely ask for more and the blackmail may continue. If you have paid, don’t panic, but don’t pay anything more. Stop all communication with the offender and block them on any accounts you have been contacted on.
  • You are not to blame: A lot of victims feel responsible but this is absolutely not the case; you are not to blame and help and support is available.
  • Avoid deleting anything: try not to delete anything that could be used as evidence such as messages, images and bank account details.
